Picking A Break

Picture
The most popular breaks are in Galveston, Surfside, Corpus Christi/Port Aransas, Matagorda and South Padre Island. Typically geography makes your decision for you, but for some people one may be just as convenient as another.

If your in the Houston area we recommend Surfside out of personal experience.

Galveston is the more popular break and even though it's a little bit more powerful/dumpy break the wind is usually blowing from the wrong direction and will make the surf rough.

Surfside is usually bigger than Galveston and the wind is usually a better direction or it has protection from the jetty.

Matagorda is a dumpier harder breaking wave that is more popular with short boarders but it's only good on the right conditions. Matagorda is more likely to get barreling waves than other places on the upper coast due to it's dumpier nature.

Corpus Christi/Port Aransas has a more powerful wave than the upper coast breaks but the wind is notoriously strong. It's been called "the windiest place on mainland U.S.A.". This being said look for any jetties piers etc. to protect you from sideshore wind.

South Padre Island is known for getting bigger and more powerful waves.

Remember there are lot's of other places to surf besides these, they just aren't as popular for one reason or another(the reason isn't always quality either).
